Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan Guide: What to See, Feeding Times and How to Visit

Osaka is full of places that keep you moving: shopping streets, food stalls and busy stations. Kaiyukan offers a different kind of afternoon—one spent looking into a blue world and waiting to see what swims past.

The whale sharks are the big attraction, but leave yourself time for the smaller creatures too. Here is what to look out for, how to get there and what to check before booking.

What Can You See at Kaiyukan?

Kaiyukan introduces habitats around the Pacific Ocean. Its exhibits take you from forest streams towards the deeper sea, rather than simply presenting a row of unrelated tanks.

Along the route, you can see whale sharks, rays, penguins, dolphins, otters, sea lions and jellyfish. There are also tropical fish and deep-sea creatures, including Japanese spider crabs.

Animals and exhibits can change, so check the official exhibition information if there is a particular species you especially want to see.

Highlights Worth Taking Your Time For

The Whale Sharks in the Pacific Ocean Tank

The central Pacific Ocean tank is the main attraction. Watch the whale sharks glide past, then look beyond them for rays and schools of fish.

The route offers views at different depths. Instead of taking one photograph and moving on, pause at another window farther along. A different viewpoint can make the same tank feel completely new.

Penguins and Dolphins

The Antarctica exhibit features penguins, while Pacific white-sided dolphins swim in the Tasman Sea exhibit.

Try watching their movements for a few minutes. It is easy to miss the underwater activity when you are concentrating on getting a photograph.

The Jellyfish Area

The jellyfish area, called Kurage Ginga, has a very different atmosphere from the larger tanks. Translucent bodies drifting through the dim space make this a lovely place to slow down.

For photographs, try turning off your flash and holding your phone steady. You may get a better result by waiting for a jellyfish to move into the light.

Are There Shows?

Kaiyukan does not offer entertainment-style dolphin or sea lion shows.

Instead, look for the scheduled feeding times. These let you watch animals eating and, in some sessions, training used for their health care.

Check the official feeding schedule before your visit. Times may change or sessions may be cancelled depending on the animals’ condition.

Location and Access

Kaiyukan is in the Tempozan area beside Osaka Bay.

Address: 1-1-10 Kaigandori, Minato-ku, Osaka, Japan.

The nearest station is Osakako Station (大阪港駅) on the Osaka Metro Chuo Line. From Exit 1, it is approximately a five-minute walk.

From Namba, take the Midosuji Line to Hommachi, then change to the Chuo Line for Osakako.

Allow extra time for the transfer and the walk before your booked entry slot. Searching for “Osakako” rather than simply “Osaka Station” will help you find the right destination.

Opening Hours and Closed Days

Opening hours vary by date and season. Last admission is one hour before closing.

Kaiyukan has occasional maintenance closures. The aquarium says it usually schedules two closed days in January, but check the official calendar for the actual dates rather than assuming it is open every day.

How Long Should You Allow?

Kaiyukan gives approximately 90–120 minutes as the time needed to follow the route.

For a relaxed visit, I would allow two to three hours, especially if you want to take photographs or wait for a feeding session. This is a planning suggestion, rather than a fixed visit duration.

Keep entry queues separate from your time inside. Choosing the last admission slot also leaves less room to linger.

Booking Tickets: Is KKday Worth It?

The KKday ticket listing currently limits entry to 3:00 pm or later. If you already plan to visit in the afternoon, it can be a convenient option: book through an English-language page, choose an available admission slot and show your QR code at the entrance.

This avoids the ticket purchase queue, although you may still need to wait to enter. The official aquarium website also sells advance e-tickets, so this convenience is not exclusive to KKday.

If you have an eligible KKday coupon, compare the final checkout price with the official price for the same date and age category. A discount is only a benefit if it actually makes your ticket cheaper.

For a morning visit, check the official ticket website instead. Also check feeding times before choosing an afternoon slot, as you may miss earlier sessions.

Before paying, confirm the admission time, closing time and package cancellation conditions. The KKday page currently contains conflicting cancellation information, so do not assume the ticket is refundable.

Leave a Little Room to Be Surprised

Before you go, choose one creature you are especially excited to see. Then, once you are inside, give something else five minutes of your attention.

It might be a ray changing direction, a penguin disappearing below the water or a jellyfish barely moving at all. The whale shark may be the reason you bought the ticket—but it does not have to be the only thing you remember.
